Joachim Harnack, perhaps the oldest resident of Allamakee county, died Sunday afternoon, August 14th, at the home of his son, Fred, near Waukon, aged a little more than ninety-seven years.

He was born in Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany, in 1835. In 1868 he emigrated to the United States, settling first near Clayton Center. Two years later, in 1870, he was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Schmidt. Their union was blessed with thirteen children, two of whom preceded him in death. The family lived on a farm near Clayton Center for a number of years and in 1898 he moved onto the Christ Harnack farm, south of Postville, where they lived until 1911, when they moved to town.

His wife passed away 21 years ago. He is survived by five daughters and six sons, Mrs. Henry Mohs, Mrs. William Eberling, Mrs. Henry Block and Mrs. John Sebastian, all of Postville; Mrs. Lora Schmidt of Minnesota; Fred, Christ, Louis, Joe and Lester Harnack, all of Postville; and John Harnack of Sioux Falls, S. D. There are also 33 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Harnack was an honest and upright man, a good neighbor, friend and citizen, and all who came within the circle of his acquaintance will grieve to learn of his passing.

The funeral services were held from St. Paul’s Lutheran church in this city at two o’clock on Wednesday afternoon, Dr. R. B. Garten officiating. Interment was made in the Postville cemetery.

This child was baptized and buried through St. Paul Lutheran Church. Both his baptism record (book 1, pages 188-9, no. 65) and his burial record (book 1, page 274, no. 3) give his birthdate clearly as 6 January 1872, but the birthdate on the tombstone is also pretty clearly 1 June 1872. Maybe something got mixed up in recording his birth month and day as numbers: 1/6 or 6/1. Also, his burial record clearly gives his death date as 4 March 1876, but the tombstone clearly reads 2 March 1876. Finally, his baptism record gives his name as Johann Heinrich Christian, and his burial record gives his name as just Johann Heinrich.

Rites Held For Christ Harnack. Christ Frederick Harnack, the son of Joachim Harnack and his wife, Caroline Schmidt Harnack, was born March 3, 1881 near Clayton Center. He was baptized and confirmed at an early age at Clayton Center. He moved with his family from Farmersburg to the Postville area in I889, and lived the remainder of his life here. He farmed in the area for most of his life, and for a few years was engaged in Clayton county road maintenance work, Mr. Harnack moved into town on January 20, 1958 and on February 20 was taken to the Postvilie Hospital. He passed away at the Postville Hospital on February 28, 1958 at the age of 76 years, 11 months, and 25 days. He was married to Marie Sophie Emilie Eberling on February 3, 1902. To this union were born two Children; Lloyd, who passed away February 20, 1929, at the age of 17, and Mabel, Mrs. Gerhard Renken of Strawberry Point. Mrs. Harnack passed away on December 16, 1955. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his son; two sisters Laura, Mrs. Will Smith of Owatonna, Minnesota, and Anna, Mrs.Henry Mohs of Postville; and two brothers, Fred of Waukon and John of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He Is survived by his daughter, Mabel, Mrs. Gerhard Renken of Strawberry Point; three sisters, Emma, Mrs. William Eberling of Postville, Elizabeth, Mrs. Henry Block of Postville, and Lena, Mrs. John Sebastian of Postville; three brothers, Louis, Joe, and Lester, all Of Postville; three grandchildren; five great- grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Christ and Lester Harnack of Postville, John of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Fred of Waukon; and two sisters, Anna, Mrs. Henry Mohs of Postville and Mrs. Laura Schmidt of Owatonna, Minnesota.

Lester Harnack, the son of Joachim Harnack and Caroline Schmidt Harnack, was born in Clayton county on January 1, 1896. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, on August 1, 1897. He was confirmed in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville, on March 20, 1910. He died at the Veterans' Hospital in Iowa City on July 20, 1961 at the age of 65 years, six months and 19 days.

He was married to Edna Wilke on March 11, 1920. The couple farmed in Clayton county for 12 years after their marriage. To this union were born two children, Marjorie and Charlene. They moved to the town of Postville in 1936, when it became apparent, that due to a serious arthritic condition, he would be unable to continue farming. He suffered from this condition for the past 35 years.

He served in the United States Army during World War I, and was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Fred of Postville and Christ of Postville; and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Mohs of Postville and Mrs. Laura Schmidt of Owatonna, Minnesota.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Marjorie, Mrs. Bernold Monroe of Luana, and Mrs. Charlene McCune of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Margo and Barbara McCune of Cedar Rapids, and Donna, David and Dana Monroe of Luana; two brothers, Joe and Louis of Postville; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Eberling of Postville, Mrs. Lizzie Block of Postville and Mrs. Lena Sebastian of Postville, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville, on July 24, at 2:00, with the pastor, the Rev. C. E. Witt, officiating. Burial was in the Postville cemetery. Military rites were conducted at the graveside by the Arthur F. Brandt Post of the American Legion.

Louis Joachim Wilhelme Harnack, son of Joachim Harnack and his wife Helena Caroline Triphahn was born May 6, 1883 in Clayton County. He was baptized July 29, 1883 and confirmed April 10, 1898 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center. He was received as a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, by Rev. Schmidt, November 5, 1916.

On February 10, 1915 he was united in marriage to Mary Schroeder. They had four children. The Harnacks farmed near Castalia until his retirement. He was a member of the Big-4 Fair board for many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife; four sisters, Mrs. Annie Mohs, Mrs. Emma Eberling, Mrs. Laura Schmidt, Mrs. Lena Sebastian; five brothers, Fred, Christ, John, Joe and Lester.

Surviving are four sons, Orville and Merlin, Postville; Harlan, Castalia and Milo, Calmar; one sister Elizabeth (Mrs. Henry Block); three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

On February 7, 1953, he was married to Helen R. Nuthman at Chicago, Ill. The couple moved to Postville in 1954. Helen died in 1957. On April 8, 1981 Orville was married to Helen M. Adam, near Postville, Iowa. Helen died in 1990.

Orville had been employed by the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus, the Pollick and Schrien Circus, Burlington Truck Lines in Chicago, Meyer's Plumbing and Heating in Postville and the City of Postville. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, and a brother, Harlan Harnack, who died in 1990.

Surviving are two brothers, Merlin Harnack and his wife, LaVila of Postville, Milo Harnack and his wife, Barbara, of Marathon, Iowa; a sister-in-law Frances Harnack of Postville; a stepdaughter, Jean Ann Davison and her husband, Rick of Cedar Rapids; two stepsons, Neil Adam and his wife, Norma, of Downers Grove, Ill. and Walter Adam of Oklahoma City, Okla., and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 1, 1995 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Rev. Charles W. Miller officiated with Joan Martins serving as organist. Casket bearers were Clifford and Donna Harnack, Marlin and Delores Harnack, Judy Harnack and Marjorie Harnack. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Harlan Harnack

Harlan Henry Harnack, son of Louis and Mary (Schroeder) Harnack, was born July 30, 1919 near Postville, Iowa. He died Thursday, September 15, 1994 in Veterans Memorial Hospital at Waukon, Iowa. He was 75 years old.

Harlan was baptized in St. Paul Lutheran Church in 1919 and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in 1934. Harlan received his education at the Empire School and the Postville School.

On January 11, 1939, he was married to Frances Thorton. Three children were born to this union.

Harlan spent his entire life farming around the Castalia and Postville areas. he was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served two terms on the church council. He was particularly proud of the church's roses. He was also active in the Bloomfield Junior Farmers 4-H, a director of the Big Four Fair, Castalia KEWS, Bloomfield Historical group, and the Postville S. C. Potluck.

Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Patricia Harnack, and two sisters-in-law, Helen Graham Harnack and Helen Adams Harnack.

Surviving is his wife, Frances, two sons, Clifford Harnack and his wife Donna of Postville, Marlin and his wife Delores of Prairie du Chien, Wisc., a daughter, Judy Harnack of Postville, five grandchildren, Renee and her husband Richard Gunderson, Laurie Harnack, Thomas Harnack, Susan and her husband John Schwietert, William Harnack and five great grandchildren, Carrie and Tricia Gunderson, and Zackery, Meranda and Alesha Harnack. He is also survived by three brothers, Orville Harnack, Merlin Harnack and his wife Lavila, all of Postville, and Milo Harnack and his wife Barbara and daughter Marjorie of Marathon, Iowa, along with two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Hinman of McGregor and Mrs. Daisy Livingood of Waukon.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 17, 1994 in St. PauLutheran Church at Postville. The Rev. Charles W. Miller officiated. Marion Schutte was the organist and Kenneth Timmerman was the soloist. Honorary casket bearers were Bill Szabo, Ray Suckow, Lyle Zieman, Daryl Sander, Jack Dibble and Merlin Harnack. Funeral services for Merlin Harnack were held Monday, December 19, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Steve Brackett officiated. Merlin Carl John Harnack was born September 28, 1925, to Louis and Mary (Schroeder) Harnack, near Postville, Iowa. He passed away Friday morning, December 16, 2005, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa, at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 21 days.

He was baptized on October 15, 1925, by the Reverend E. T. Finck and confirmed November 13, 1938, by the Reverend Frederick R. Ludwig, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. He attended a rural school near Postville. On April 24, 1966 Merlin was married to LaVila Jane Berger in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Volga, Iowa, by the Reverend Roger Buhr.

Merlin was employed as a Policeman for the City of Postville for many years. He also drove school bus for Postville Community Schools for a number of years. Merlin was active in the community, serving as a volunteer Fireman and on the Big Four Fair Board. He was a member of the Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge.

He enjoyed watching sports. Some of his favorite teams included the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Cubs. Merlin also had a love for fishing. You could often find him fishing in his boat near their cabin at Harpers Ferry. Merlin will be remembered as a good friend who was very helpful and loved to joke with his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harlan and Orville Harnack.

Surviving is his wife LaVila, a brother, Milo (Ruth) Harnack of Webb, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Milo Harnack

Funeral services for Milo Harnack were held on Thursday, June 22, 2006, at United Pentecostal Church in Marathon, Iowa with Pastor Doug Enger and Pastor Richard White officiating. Organist was Madeline Reuter.

Milo Louie Harnack, the son of Louie and Mary Schroeder Harnack, was born September 28, 1925, in rural Postville, Iowa. He received his early education from rural Postville School. Milo entered the United States Army on August 29, 1952 in Des Moines, Iowa. While serving his country, Milo received the Korean Service medal, Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Silver Star and Greek Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Silver Star and the Greek Medallion from the King Of Greece. Milo was Honorably Discharged on May 28, 1954 at Camp Carson, Colorado.

On January 7, 1956, Milo married Barbara Joan McMeekan in Postville, Iowa. To this union a daughter, Marjorie, was born. Following their marriage they lived in the communities of Calmar, Mt. Pleasant, Storm Lake, Alta and Marathon. Milo farmed in his earlier years before working for 25 years for the Iowa Department of Transportation. Following his retirement, Milo drove truck for Gillis Ag and HyLine. Milo also worked at Wal-Mart as a greeter. On September 25, 2001, Milo married Ruth Ogden in Rossie, Iowa. Following their marriage they resided in Gillette Grove, IA. Milo served as Chaplin for the V.F.W. Clay County Post #3159 of Spencer, was a member of the American Legion Glen Pederson Post #1 of Spencer, and was a lifetime member of the Order Of The Purple Heart and V.F.W.

On June 18, 2006, Milo passed away at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 80. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Barbara, brothers: Orville, Harlan and his twin brother, Merlin.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Webb, Iowa; his daughter and her husband, Marjorie Irene and Terry Nading of Marathon, Iowa; stepchildren Gene Pate and his wife Debbie, of Midlothian, VA, and Gloria Fitzpatrick and her husband Bob of Milford, IA; two nephews; one niece; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Casket bearers were Chris Jackson, Robert Smith, Wayne Markley, Marlin Harnack, Judy Harnack, and Clifford Harnack. Honorary casket bearers were Lee and Alyce Shatto. Military Services were provided by Marathon American Legion Post #12, VFW Clay County Post #3159, and American Legion Glen Pederson Post #1. Interment was at Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon, Iowa.

Clifford Harnack age 83, of Ossian, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023 at his home in Ossian.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, at the Helms Funeral Home, 604 South Ave in Decorah. Burial will be held in the spring at the Postville Cemetery.

The Helms Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
