Martha was born in Wall Lake Township, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, to Johann Jürgen Heinrich "Henry" Muchow and Amelia Bruce. Martha's mother died when she was about 3 days old and she was raised by her grandparents George and Mary (Schultz) Bruce.
She married August Knodt on 9 June 1904 in Hartford, and their children were Thelma Marie and Mardella Margaret. August died in 1929. On 20 April 1932 Martha married Walter Frederick Rittman at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. No children were born to them. Walter died on 5 May 1949.
In the early 1960's Martha sold her home in Sioux Falls and relocated to her daughter Thelma's home in West Union, Iowa. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls and Zion Lutheran Church in West Union.
