Notizen - Emily "Milly" Schmidt was born February 3, 1901, to William and Amelia Muchow, farmsteaders southwest of Hartford, SD. A twin sister, Clara, died of whooping cough at six weeks of age. Milly was baptized and confirmed at the rural Trinity Lutheran Church and graduated from Hartford High School. As secretary for the Farmer's Elevator in Hartford, Milly not only had to know how to type, but also how to weigh and sell the grain. She attended Nettleton Business College where she met her husband, Clifford "Smitty" Schmidt. The couple married on June 1, 1922, and made Sioux Falls their home. In 1992, she moved from her home to Dow Rummel Village. Over the years, Milly gave much time and energy to church activities and served as president of the local Zion Lutheran Women's Missionary League and also held LWML state offices. She was a very active member of the PTA beginning in 1939. She held offices at all levels, serving as state President, and positions on State Committees and National Boards. In 1953, Milly received the Cosmopolitan Award for Community Service. Milly worked to organize the Crippled Children's Hospital and School, lunch programs for schools in Sioux Falls, as well as the LPN program of nursing. One for her goals was to promote better education and health services for children. Milly was the youngest of seven children and always enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends. Sending cards and writing letters was a very special gift of loved she shared. Visitors were warmly welcomed at her home where the door was always open, the coffee pot was perking and cookies were baked for a drop-in visit or bridge club. Her spare time was spent on embroidery and quilting.
She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and as "special grandma" to the great-grandchildren. Milly is survived by one son, Merle and his wife, Delores, of Olathe, Kansas; three grandchildren, Pamela and her husband, Barry Beeninga of Brier, Washington; Sheri Schmidt of Franklin, TN; and Steven Schmidt and his wife, Jane, of Overland Park, Kansas; two great-grandchildren, Allison and Matthew Beeninga; a niece and a nephew and extended family.
