      Dickinson Funeral Home Obituary
Elizabeth "Betty" J. Bailey, 77, of La Crosse, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at her home surrounded by her loving family, after a very brief and courageous battle with cancer. Passing away on her birthday was something as unique as she was.
Betty was born on December 22, 1944 to Walter and Pluma (White) Niebuhr. She grew up in the apartment above the Niebuhr Plumbing and Heating business in the beautiful red brick building on 3rd Street and Cameron Avenue. So many happy memories were made there from family dinners, to looking out the big bay window to the big goulash parties every year during Oktoberfest. She graduated from Central High School in 1963. She always remained close to her Class of '63 friends. Betty married her junior high school sweetheart and soulmate Robert Bailey of La Crosse on April 23, 1966, and they were married for 56 years. Every anniversary was so special. They loved to travel and enjoyed a trip of a lifetime to Europe during the summer of 2004.
Betty was a lifelong member of English Lutheran Church. She was always grateful to her faith mentors. She had a strong faith and relieved her pain by listening to her favorite hymns and praying. One of her greatest joys was being on the Bethlehem project steering committee. She and Bob were the carpenters and she loved to proclaim the story of Christ's birth to the visitors of the town.
Being a stay-at-home Mom and raising her children was very important to Betty. She was a Discovery Day Care provider for many years. In 1983, she started her career as an English as a Second Language Teacher Assistant at Hamilton School. She worked with a great team of staff and took great pride in teaching Hmong children. She also spent countless hours teaching the parents how to properly live in their homes and adjust to the American culture. When Northwoods School opened in 1992, she transferred there and continued to make lasting friendships with the staff and enhancing the lives of the numerous children she taught. She was always known to be the person that gave great hugs. Betty retired in 2004 after a great 21-year career.
During the last 10 years of her life, she took great pride in her collies, Lizzy, David and Cora. Lizzy was a great service dog and her angel. Betty and David became quite a show team and they won 2 titles from the Novice A classes and had many other placements. She trained Cora to be a great service dog for her grandson, Ben. Her 4-legged children meant so much to her. She created such special bonds with her collie friends.
She is survived by her loving husband Robert. Together they raised their three children, Pamela, Debra, and Richard. She so much enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren: Benjimin, Rebecca, Heather, Matt, Autumn Erica and Matthew, and great grandchildren Jaxson and Jameson. They were the sunshine of her life. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Joan Niebuhr and many special cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Pluma Niebuhr, brother and sister-in-law, James and Harriet Niebuhr, brother Roland Niebuhr and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at Noon at English Lutheran Church, 1509 King Street, La Crosse. Pastor Becky Goche will officiate, and burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of services. A lunch will follow in the fellowship hall. Masks are required and Covid-19 safety practices will be in place including social distancing.
The family would like to thank the Gundersen Hospice Team for their great care and support during the last week of Betty's life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to English Lutheran Church or the Gundersen Healthcare Cancer Research Center. The Dickinson Family Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.dickinsonfuneralhomes.com
