Robert H. Barter, 85, GW medical professor
Robert H. Barter, 85, a medical doctor and professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology at George Washington University School of Medicine, died of heart failure Feb. 16 at Naples Community Center in Naples, Fla.
Dr. Barter was born in Harvard, Ill. He attended the University of Wisconsin on a basketball scholarship, earning a bachelor's degree in 1937 and medical degree in 1940.
His internship at Chicago Lying-In Hospital was interrupted by service in the Army Medical Corps from 1942 to 1946. He served in the South Pacific and at Walter Reed Army Hospital, leaving the service with the rank of major.
His residency in obstetrics and gynecology was completed at Wisconsin General Hospital in Madison in 1946.
He was chief medical officer in obstetrics and gynecology at Gallenger Municipal Hospital in the District from 1948 to 1950 and named associate professor at George Washington School of Medicine in 1950. He became full professor and chairman of the department in 1958, retiring as chairman in 1967, after which he conducted private practice until 1989.
He was consultant to the National Institutes of Health and at Walter Reed.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Joanne Barter of Naples; two sons, Robert R. Barter of Lafayette, Calif., and Dr. James F. Barter of Bethesda; a daughter, Mary Barter Roop of Bethesda; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase at 11 a.m. tomorrow
