5501 John Harnack, 89, Pioneer Resident, Passes Away Friday

John Harnack, 89, a resident of this community since 1878, passed away last Friday morning in a Rochester, Minn. hospital, following an operation. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock in the family home in Postville, with the Rev. F. R. Ludwig officiating, and interment was in the Postville cemetery.

Mr. Harnack was born October 29, 1857, at Garnavillo as the son of Christ and Dora Sass Harnack, and lived in that community and attended the schools there until the family moved to this community in 1878.

He was married to Miss Maggie Thoma of Postville on April 14, 1885, by the late Rev. John Gass. To this union four children were born, of whom three died during an epidemic prevailing here in 1894.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Fred J. Miller; four sisters, Ida, Mrs. John Krambeer of Monona; Anna, Mrs. Joe Schultz, Emma, Mrs. Louis Meyer, and Mary, Mrs. John Schroeder, all of Postville. His wife, parents, a brother, Bernhardt, and one sister, Sophia, Mrs. August Dahl, preceded him in death.

Mr. Harnack's vocation was farming. After his marriage he operated his father's farm in Fayette county and later purchased one of his own, operating the two for a number of years, but finally selling the one in Fayette county. Afterwards he purchased the farm a mile west of Postville on which the family lived for eight years, whereupon he moved to town and Postville has been his home since.

Mr Harnack served on the Town Council from 1906 to 1910 and was always interest in the progressive movements of the community.

5502 John Herman Sebastian, son of Frank and Margaret Meyer Sebastian was born near Postville on May 22, 1880. He died at his home in Postville on Saturday, December 6, 1958 at the age of 78 years.

Mr. Sebastian attended schools at Hardin and Postville.

On February 6, 1907 John Sebastian was married to Lena Harnack at Postville.

The couple lived on a farm in Winneshiek county until 1919 when they moved to Allamakee county. Mr. Sebastian discontinued farming in 1937 when the family moved to Postville where Mr. Sebastian became engaged in various occupations.

John Sebastian was survived by his wife; one son Victor of Postville; one daughter Mrs. Alvin (Shirley) Monroe of Postville and five grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Henry Sebastian of Park Rapids, Minnesota, George Sebastian of Postville; two sisters, Mrs. Tillie Meyer of Postville and Mrs. Carl Letchford of Frankville.

A son Herman died in infancy.

John Sebastian was confirmed on April 7, 1895 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Postville. He transferred his membership to the Community Presbyterian Church of Postville on December 24, 1939.

Funeral services were held at the Community Presbyterian Church, Monday, December 8, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Walter T. Martin in charge of the rites. Burial was in the Postville cemetery.

5503 Joseph Henry Harnack, the son of Joseph Harnack and Caroline Schmidt Harnack, was born on April 9, 1893 in Farmersburg township, Clayton county, Iowa. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church at Garnavillo on July 4, 1893 and confirmed in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on April 8, 1906. He died at his home on October 20, 1963 at the age of 70 years, six months and 11 days.

The family moved to the Postville area in 1902. He was married to Florence Heins at Elkader on April 25, 1922. He served in the United States Army in World War I, including a term of overseas duty, and was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad for 45 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville and a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Christ and Lester Harnack of Postville, John of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Fred of Waukon; and two sisters, Anna, Mrs. Henry Mohs of Postville and Mrs. Laura Schmidt of Owatonna, Minnesota.

He is survived by his wife; one brother, Louis of Postville; three sisters, Emma, Mrs. William Eberling of Postville, Elizabeth, Mrs. Henry Block of Postville, Lena, Mrs. John Sebastian of Postville; a number of nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services are being held at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville, on Wednesday, October 23, with burial in the Postville cemetery, the Rev. Charles E. Witt officiating.
