4636 | Harlan Harnack Harlan Henry Harnack, son of Louis and Mary (Schroeder) Harnack, was born July 30, 1919 near Postville, Iowa. He died Thursday, September 15, 1994 in Veterans Memorial Hospital at Waukon, Iowa. He was 75 years old. Harlan was baptized in St. Paul Lutheran Church in 1919 and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in 1934. Harlan received his education at the Empire School and the Postville School. On January 11, 1939, he was married to Frances Thorton. Three children were born to this union. Harlan spent his entire life farming around the Castalia and Postville areas. he was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served two terms on the church council. He was particularly proud of the church's roses. He was also active in the Bloomfield Junior Farmers 4-H, a director of the Big Four Fair, Castalia KEWS, Bloomfield Historical group, and the Postville S. C. Potluck. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Patricia Harnack, and two sisters-in-law, Helen Graham Harnack and Helen Adams Harnack. Surviving is his wife, Frances, two sons, Clifford Harnack and his wife Donna of Postville, Marlin and his wife Delores of Prairie du Chien, Wisc., a daughter, Judy Harnack of Postville, five grandchildren, Renee and her husband Richard Gunderson, Laurie Harnack, Thomas Harnack, Susan and her husband John Schwietert, William Harnack and five great grandchildren, Carrie and Tricia Gunderson, and Zackery, Meranda and Alesha Harnack. He is also survived by three brothers, Orville Harnack, Merlin Harnack and his wife Lavila, all of Postville, and Milo Harnack and his wife Barbara and daughter Marjorie of Marathon, Iowa, along with two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Hinman of McGregor and Mrs. Daisy Livingood of Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 17, 1994 in St. PauLutheran Church at Postville. The Rev. Charles W. Miller officiated. Marion Schutte was the organist and Kenneth Timmerman was the soloist. Honorary casket bearers were Bill Szabo, Ray Suckow, Lyle Zieman, Daryl Sander, Jack Dibble and Merlin Harnack. Casket bearers were Laurie Harnack, William Harnack, Thomas Harnack, Stuart Schultz, Rick and Renee Gunderson, John and Susan Schwietert. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. 4638 | HARNACK, Lena (Warnholz) --- 1883-1952 Funeral Services For Mrs. Harnack On Monday Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday from the Schutte Funeral Home to St. Paul's Church at 2:00 for Mrs. Lena W. Harnack, 69, who passed away at the home of her sister in Waukon on November 21. Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig, pastor of St. Paul's officiated at the final rites. Interment was in Postville Cemetery. Mrs. Lena Warnholz Harnack, daughter to John Warnholz and Elizabeth Schultz Warnholz, was born October 28, 1883 in Fayette county, and departed this life after a lingering period of declining health on November 21, 1952, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Martin Halverson at Waukon, age 69 years and 23 days. Mrs. Harnack was received into active membership in the Lutheran Church in the St. Paul's congregation of Postville on March 27, 1904. Mrs. Harnack was united in marriage with Fred Harnack of Postville, on October 16, 1906, at West Union. Mr. Harnack preceded her in death, about ten years ago. Mrs. Harnack was a lifelong resident of Northeast Iowa. She was born in Fayette county. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Harnack established their home in Postville. After a year in town they settled on a farm two miles southeast of Postville, where they remained several years. The next several years were spent on a farm two and one-half miles northeast of Postville and the succeeding several years on a farm south of Luana. The family home was then established on a farm about five miles southeast of Waukon, where they remained for ten years. Ten years ago Mr. and Mrs. Harnack retired and moved to Waukon, which continued to be her home until death came to her. Left to mourn her passing are: three brothers, Henry Warnholz, of Waukon, Charles Warnholz, of Postville, and John Warnholz, of Floyd, Iowa; five sisters, Mrs. Bertha Woods, of Mason City, Mrs. Emma Crandel, of Lewis, Wisconsin, Edith (Mrs. Herman) Nuehring, of Waterville, Mamie (Mrs. Martin) Halverson, of Waukon, Frieda (Mrs. Floyd) Madison, of Casper Valley, California; as well as other relatives and friends. Mrs. Harnack was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, one in infancy, and Mrs. John Schlee, and one brother, William Warnholz. Waskow, 82, of Bettendorf Health Care Center, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Jan. 24, 1994, in St. Luke's Hospital, Davenport, after a long illness. Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, by the Rev. Kay Slocum of First Lutheran Church. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Friday at the chapel. Survivors include a daughter, Georgiann Riehl of Bettendorf; a son, James of St. Louis; and a sister, Evelyn Waskow of Monona. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Harvey was born Oct. 31, 1911, in Monona to Robert and Catherine Garms Waskow, and married Johanna A. Tiedt on Oct. 31, 1934, in Strawberry Point. She died Aug. 12, 1989. Harvey worked in electrical sales for the Terry Durin Co. for more than 25 years, retiring in 1979.
