    Merlin Harnack

    Funeral services for Merlin Harnack were held Monday, December 19, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Steve Brackett officiated. Joann Martins was the organist. Casket Bearers were: Clifford Harnack, Judy Harnack, Marje Nading, Mike Upton, Ronald Upton, Leslie Upton, Kenneth Upton, and Duane Berger. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

    Merlin Carl John Harnack was born September 28, 1925, to Louis and Mary (Schroeder) Harnack, near Postville, Iowa. He passed away Friday morning, December 16, 2005, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa, at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 21 days.

    He was baptized on October 15, 1925, by the Reverend E. T. Finck and confirmed November 13, 1938, by the Reverend Frederick R. Ludwig, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. He attended a rural school near Postville. On April 24, 1966 Merlin was married to LaVila Jane Berger in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Volga, Iowa, by the Reverend Roger Buhr.

    Merlin was employed as a Policeman for the City of Postville for many years. He also drove school bus for Postville Community Schools for a number of years. Merlin was active in the community, serving as a volunteer Fireman and on the Big Four Fair Board. He was a member of the Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge.

    He enjoyed watching sports. Some of his favorite teams included the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Cubs. Merlin also had a love for fishing. You could often find him fishing in his boat near their cabin at Harpers Ferry. Merlin will be remembered as a good friend who was very helpful and loved to joke with his family and friends.

    He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harlan and Orville Harnack.

    Surviving is his wife LaVila, a brother, Milo (Ruth) Harnack of Webb, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

    Services were conducted from St. Paul Lutheran church December 31, 1971 for Louis Harnack, who died at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville December 29. The Rev. Norman Ullestad officiated.

    Louis Joachim Wilhelme Harnack, son of Joachim Harnack and his wife Helena Caroline Triphahn was born May 6, 1883 in Clayton County. He was baptized July 29, 1883 and confirmed April 10, 1898 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center. He was received as a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, by Rev. Schmidt, November 5, 1916.

    On February 10, 1915 he was united in marriage to Mary Schroeder. They had four children. The Harnacks farmed near Castalia until his retirement. He was a member of the Big-4 Fair board for many years.

    He was preceded in death by his wife; four sisters, Mrs. Annie Mohs, Mrs. Emma Eberling, Mrs. Laura Schmidt, Mrs. Lena Sebastian; five brothers, Fred, Christ, John, Joe and Lester.

    Surviving are four sons, Orville and Merlin, Postville; Harlan, Castalia and Milo, Calmar; one sister Elizabeth (Mrs. Henry Block); three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

    Burial was in the Postville cemetery.

    Harnack Rites To Be Thursday

    Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:15 p.m. at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in Postville for Mrs. Louie Harnack of Castalia, who passed away Sunday.
    The Rev. Charles E. Witt, pastor of St. Paul's will be in charge. Burial will be in Postville cemetery.
    Mrs. Louie Harnack, nee Mary C. Schroeder, was born in Lavern Westphalia, Germany on August 20, 1890, the daughter of Ludwig Schroeder and his wife, Wilhelmina Klocke. She was baptized on September 10, 1890 in Germany, and came to this country at the age of two with her parents.
    She was confirmed in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on March 27, 1904, in which Church she remained active all of her life.
    She was married to Louie Harnack on February 10, 1915, and they farmed in the Postville and Castalia area all their lives. To this union were born four sons: Orville of Postville, Harlan, Merlin and Milo of Castalia.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Henry Schroeder of Postville, Carl Schroeder of Postville, William F. Schroeder of Williamsburg, and Louis L. Schroeder of Williamsburg; two sisters, Minnie, Mrs. Reuben Brainard, of Postville, and Sophia Schroeder, who passed away in infancy; four step-brothers, Christian Schroeder of Marshfield, Wisconsin, William Schroeder of Postville, Louis H. Schroeder of Postville, and Fred Schroeder of Wellman; and two step-sisters, Mrs. Louise Fischer of Postville and Mrs. Charlotte Meyer of Postville.
    She is survived by her husband; her four sons; three grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
    She passed away on August 11, 1958 at the Postville Hospital after a very brief illness, at the age of 67 years, 11 months and 21 days.

    Joachim Harnack, perhaps the oldest resident of Allamakee county, died Sunday afternoon, August 14th, at the home of his son, Fred, near Waukon, aged a little more than ninety-seven years.

    He was born in Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany, in 1835. In 1868 he emigrated to the United States, settling first near Clayton Center. Two years later, in 1870, he was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Schmidt. Their union was blessed with thirteen children, two of whom preceded him in death. The family lived on a farm near Clayton Center for a number of years and in 1898 he moved onto the Christ Harnack farm, south of Postville, where they lived until 1911, when they moved to town.

    His wife passed away 21 years ago. He is survived by five daughters and six sons, Mrs. Henry Mohs, Mrs. William Eberling, Mrs. Henry Block and Mrs. John Sebastian, all of Postville; Mrs. Lora Schmidt of Minnesota; Fred, Christ, Louis, Joe and Lester Harnack, all of Postville; and John Harnack of Sioux Falls, S. D. There are also 33 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

    Mr. Harnack was an honest and upright man, a good neighbor, friend and citizen, and all who came within the circle of his acquaintance will grieve to learn of his passing.

    The funeral services were held from St. Paul’s Lutheran church in this city at two o’clock on Wednesday afternoon, Dr. R. B. Garten officiating. Interment was made in the Postville cemetery.

    Mrs. Johanne Mary Caroline Harnack, whose maiden name was Schmidt, was born in Jargenon, Germany, November 13, 1853, and died at her home in Postville about 7 o’clock, Wednesday morning, April 5, 1911, aged 57 years, 4 months add [sic] 23 days.

    After being confirmed she emigrated with her parents to America in 1868, settling first near Clayton Center. On April 27, 1870, she was married to Jochen Harnack. To this union were born 13 children, 7 boys and 6 girls, of whom 11 survive, namely-Fred, Christ F., Louis, John, Jochen, Lester, Mrs. William Eberling, Mrs. Henry Block, Mrs. John Sebastian, all near Postville; Mrs. Henry Moos [Mohs], of Lim Springs, and Mrs. Louis Schmidt, of Steele Co., Minn.

    In March 1899 the deceased with her family came to Grand Meadow township, three miles south of Postville, where they resided until March 1, 1911, when they moved to Postville in their own home. But after having it as they wished, Mrs. Harnack’s illness took a change for the worse. During the preparatory service her soul passed away. She is survived by his husband, six sons, (who were the pall bearers) five daughters, 3 brothers, a sister, grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

    The funeral was held from the Lutheran church last Saturday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev. R. Kuehne officiating. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
