Muchow,Wm.,one of the early pioneer settlers of the Hartford vicinity,was born in Germany Sept.8,1858. He came to United States in 1873 and lived in Iowa till 1876.He then left Iowa came to the state of South Dakota.He took up a claim and homesteaded on a farm five miles south west of Hartford,located in Wall Lake Township, legally described as the Southwest quarter of section 5.

A few years later, he married Amelia Mahl who came with her parents to the United States from Germany.They crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a sailboat,which took them eight weeks. They ran out of food,and supplies,before reaching land.They first located in Clayton County,Iowa near Postville. Later they came to South Dakota, travelling by covered wagons, which proved to be a difficult trip.There were no bridges across any of the rivers or streams in those days. They suffered many hardships settling in a new land, trying to make a living,build churches,schools,towns,roads etc. A school house was built on the Wm Muchow farm, approximately forty rods east of where Earle Geides house now stands. He served as clerk on the school board and on the township boards for several terms. The family of Wm. Muchow and Amelia Muchow were Louis Muchow,Fred Muchow,Otto Muchow,W.C. Muchow,Ella Muchow Schievelbein, Selma Muchow Meves and Milly Muchow Schmidt.

Later as the family began to grow up and could help out with farming,William bought more land and expanded. He purchased farms in Section 27-31 and 33, all in Hartford township.

WILLIAM MUCHOW, PIONEER, IS DEAD

Lived in Wall Lake Township 61 years----Came to the United States from Germany.

William Muchow, 77 years old,pioneer retired farmer and father of Mrs. Cliff Schmidt of Sioux Falls,died at a local hospital late Monday afternoon.Mr. Muchow had been a resident of Wall Lake Township for 61 years.

A native of Germany,he came to the United States as a boy and first settled in Iowa.Mr. Muchow came to South Dakota from that state and was one of the oldest residents of the Wall Lake Township community.

He is survived by the widow,four sons;W.C. of Hartford,Louis of Lahabre,Calif., Fred of Hartford and O.W. of Fullerton,Calif.:three daughters,Mrs. Henry Schievelbein,Hartford; Mrs. Cliff Meves,Hartford, and Mrs.Schmidt of this city;seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o`clock Thursday afternoon at the family residence and 2 o`clock at the East Wall Lake Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the East Wall Lake Church cemetery,under the direction of the Miller Funeral Home.
