6401 | Service Held For Former Resident. The funeral service of Mrs. J. C. Harnack, former Postville resident, was held Saturday, July 12 at 1:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Hartford, South Dakota. Mrs. Harnack died July 9 at her home near rural Sioux Falls. Ella Jacobs was born December 19. 1889 in Postville. She was married to John Harnack on February 11, 1914. They farmed in this area until 1929 when the couple moved to the Sioux Falls area. She was preceded in death by her husband John who died in 1938 and a daughter Lois who died in 1931. She is survived by four sons, Leslie, Ralston, Nebraska; Harold, Galion, Ohio; Vernon, Beaver Creek, Minnesota; John, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and a daughter Mrs. Ernest (Helen) Hoefert, Hartford, South Dakota. Also, 17 grandchildren and 12 great grand-children. 6406 | Shirley Jean Heath, age 79, of Lewiston Township, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at the Columbia County Health Care Center of Wyocena. Shirley was born on Nov. 21, 1931, in Madison, the daughter of Clarence and Josephine (Kempfer) Goth. She was married to William Heath on June 19, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale. Shirley had worked at Badger Ordinance, Weyenberg Shoe Factory and Ray-O-Vac. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Lewiston, and had been a member of VFW Auxillary. Shirley liked to dance, play cards, do crossword puzzles, and do embroidery. After retirement, Shirley and Bill did fretwork. She enjoyed the "lunch bunch" at the Portage Nutrition Site, and socializing with friends. She is survived by her husband, William; five children, Cathy Voges of Rio, Bill (Deb)Heath of Rio, Jim (Michelle) Heath of Waunakee, Roseann Hayes of Columbia, MO., and Jenifer (John) Schweger of Montello; her brothers and sisters, Carol Damson of Oregon,Wis., Sheldon (Frieda) Goth of Madison, Merlin (Angie) Goth of Madison, Gary (Claudette)of California, Vera Carpenter of Madison, Ronald (Hazel) Goth of Marshall, Delmar (Rosie) Scharnhorst of Missouri, and Howard (Ilene) Martin of Maine; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; other near relatives and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers-in-law, Paul Damson and Mike Carpenter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, with the Rev. William Grimm officiating. Inurnment will be private. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage. Harnack, age 19, of Postville, Iowa died Sunday, May 31, 1987 in a 1-car accident one mile northwest of Frankville, Iowa in Winneshiek County about 3:50 a.m. She was driving a 1978 Mercury southwest on Winneshiek County Road 4B when it went out of control, skidded off the roadway and rolled several times through the ditch according to the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department. She was ejected from the vehicle and as it came to rest was pinned underneath. She was taken to the Winneshiek county Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. She was not wearing a seatbelt. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 3 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa with the Rev. Julius L. Peterson officiating, assisted by the Rev. David H. Palm. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery with Schutte Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were were Mark Finley, Shane Kohrs, Kraig Grimes, Merlin Harnack, Milo Harnack, and David Gunderson. Patty was born October 21, 1967 in Postville, Iowa to Clifford and Donna (Rima) Harnack. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was a member. She was a 1986 graduate of Postville Community Schools where she was a basketball cheerleader. She had been an employee of Iowa Turkey Products in Postville, Iowa. Preceding her in death were her grandmother Lois Houdek and grandfather Donald Rima. Surviving are her parents; a brother Thomas Harnack, at home; a half brother Michael Aldredge of Decorah, Iowa; 2 sisters, Mrs. Rick (Renee) Gunderson of Castalia, Iowa and Laurie Harnack of Richland Center, Wisconsin; grandparents Harlan and Frances Harnack of Castalia and Ralph Houdek of Decorah, Iowa; maternal great-grandmother Bertha Iverson of Rock Island, Illinois; a niece, an uncle and three aunts. | HARNACK, Patricia Roberta (I50598)
