5708 | LaVerne John Garms, 91 LaVerne was born on the family farm near Monona, Iowa, on May 26, 1919, to Rudolph and Louise (Schroeder) Garms. He attended country school and graduated from Monona High School with the class of 1936. LaVerne was united in marriage to Ivanelle Lenth on June 6, 1943, at the St. John Lutheran Church, Luana. Five children were born to this union. LaVerne farmed his entire life until retiring to Monona with his wife. He enjoyed traveling, dancing, fishing, playing cards and all sports. LaVerne was innovative in his many years of agriculture. He was community minded and served on numerous boards over the years. LaVerne will be deeply missed by his many family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Ivanelle Garms, Monona; five children, Wayne (Lois) Garms, Monona, Judy (Rex) Carlson, Woodbury, Minn., Keith (Kathy) Garms, Elkader, Kristy (Joey) Rigdon, Fairbank and Laurie Garms (Phil Steffen), Dubuque; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Doris Garms; and one brother-in-law, Lorenz (Emelyn) Lenth, Monona. 5719 | ledig From the August 1938 Postville newspaper: Henry Schroeder Passes On at Iowa City Tuesday Henry C. Schroeder, aged 56 years, a lifelong resident of this community, passed away at the University hospital at Iowa City Tuesday shortly after noon and funeral services are being held Friday afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran church in this city at two o'clock with the Rev. F.R. Ludwig officiating. Interment will be made in Postville cemetery. Mr. Schroeder, who had been ailing for 27 years, following a paralytic stroke, was taken to the Iowa City hospital August 5 and submitted to an operation last Saturday from which he failed to rally. He was born in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county, on the place now known as the Thomas Gordon farm, March 2, 1882, the son of Carl C. and Maria Mueller Schroeder. As a boy he attended the rural schools and worked on the home farm, moving with the family in 1913 to the McWilliams place east of Postville. In 1920 he came with his father to Postville which has since been his home. He is survived by his brother, Otto, of this city, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Muchow, of Hartford, South Dakota, both of whom, together with Mr. Muchow, were at his bedside during his last illness. | SCHROEDER, Henry Carl (I37687)

5720 | ledig Henry Gericke farmed five miles northeast of Postville. He never married and his sister, Tillie, kept house for him. His death was ruled a suicide. A neighbor found him seated behind the steering wheel in his car, a 1936 Dodge, parked in the garage with the motor running. Sheriff William Huffman, Deputy Bill Ryan and Coroner Pateman were immediately called to the scene. Dr. Milton Kiesau of Postville pronounced the man dead. | GERICKE, Henry Fred Conrad (I42982)

5721 | ledig Private funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Schutte Funeral Home in this city for William Gericke and burial was in Postville cemetery. The Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig officiated. Mr. Gericke was born at Clayton Center September 29, 1871, as the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gericke. He came to this community when a young man of 18 or 19 years and followied farming in Post township until about 13 years ago, when he came to Postvile to make his home. For about 50 years he was a thresherman, operating his machine on many farms here. About 35 years ago he won considerable fame as an inventor, a mechanical farm gate and cattle stanchions being among his best selling inventions. In recent years he has been employed at various jobs, and most recently he was employed by Lorence Meyer of Castalia in the stone quarries near where the new rendering works will be erected. Mr. Gericke is survived by three brothers and five sisters, John, Fred and Henry Gericke, Mrs. Christ Meyer, Mrs. Otto Sander, Mrs. Ben Morch, Mrs. William Sebastian and Mathilda Gericke, all of this community. He was unmarried. Postville Herald, January 23, 1946 Mr. Gericke was shot and killed by deputy officers, after fatally shooting Sheriff Leonard Bulman of Allamakee Co. The Sheriff was attempting to serve an insanity warrant on Gericke.
