From the August 1938 Postville newspaper:
Henry Schroeder Passes On at Iowa City Tuesday

Henry C. Schroeder, aged 56 years, a lifelong resident of this community, passed away at the University hospital at Iowa City Tuesday shortly after noon and funeral services are being held Friday afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran church in this city at two o'clock with the Rev. F.R. Ludwig officiating. Interment will be made in Postville cemetery.

Mr. Schroeder, who had been ailing for 27 years, following a paralytic stroke, was taken to the Iowa City hospital August 5 and submitted to an operation last Saturday from which he failed to rally.

He was born in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county, on the place now known as the Thomas Gordon farm, March 2, 1882, the son of Carl C. and Maria Mueller Schroeder. As a boy he attended the rural schools and worked on the home farm, moving with the family in 1913 to the McWilliams place east of Postville. In 1920 he came with his father to Postville which has since been his home.

He is survived by his brother, Otto, of this city, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Muchow, of Hartford, South Dakota, both of whom, together with Mr. Muchow, were at his bedside during his last illness.

Henry Gericke farmed five miles northeast of Postville. He never married and his sister, Tillie, kept house for him.

His death was ruled a suicide. A neighbor found him seated behind the steering wheel in his car, a 1936 Dodge, parked in the garage with the motor running. Sheriff William Huffman, Deputy Bill Ryan and Coroner Pateman were immediately called to the scene. Dr. Milton Kiesau of Postville pronounced the man dead.

About 35 years ago he won considerable fame as an inventor, a mechanical farm gate and cattle stanchions being among his best selling inventions.
